Average engagement rate on Instagram: the real number

The median engagement rate across 17,000+ real Instagram creator profiles is 1.87%. That's meaningfully higher than the 0.7–1.5% range most engagement-rate roundups quote — and the gap isn't noise, it's methodology.

Why the "average" you've seen elsewhere is probably lower

Most published averages are pooled: total engagements across every account in the sample, divided by total followers in the sample. That math is dominated by whichever accounts hold the most followers — and follower-heavy accounts have the lowest engagement rates of any tier. A handful of seven-figure accounts can drag a pooled "average" down toward 1%, even if most individual creators sit well above it.

Ours is per-creator. We compute each account's own engagement rate, then take the median — the rate of the creator standing in the middle of the pack, weighted zero by follower count. That's why 1.87% is the honest answer to "what's typical," while pooled averages describe something closer to "where most of the platform's total engagement volume sits," which is a different (and less useful) question.

50K–500K1.93%0.69%6.03%
500K+2.46%0.94%6.66%

This is also why "average engagement rate" is the wrong single number to chase. The middle 50% of all creators spans 0.72% to 5.56% — a nearly eight-fold range — so a single average flattens a distribution that's genuinely wide. Find your row above before deciding whether your number is fine.

Niche shifts the average further than size does

Comedians post a 6.32% median. Education creators post 0.66%. That's a wider spread than anything follower count produces, because the standard likes-plus-comments formula rewards reaction content and undercounts content that gets saved or sent instead of liked. A 2% rate reads as excellent in one niche and mediocre in another — check the full benchmark breakdown for your category rather than trusting one blended average.

The formula, if you're calculating your own

Average ER (%) = (avg. likes + avg. comments over last 10–12 posts) ÷ followers × 100

Skip pinned posts, and skip the one post that obviously went viral relative to the rest — both do to your own number exactly what large accounts do to platform-wide averages: inflate it past what's typical.
