ER means engagement rate. It's the share of your followers who like or comment on a typical post, written as a percentage — a 3% ER is roughly three interactions per hundred followers.
The abbreviation turns up unexplained in media kits, agency briefs and brand DMs because influencer marketing runs on it. Brands compare ER before they compare follower counts, since ER is the cheapest available signal that an audience is real.

How to calculate ER on Instagram
ER (%) = (average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100
Average your last 10–12 posts, not your best one. And leave pinned posts out of the average — a pinned post is usually pinned because it went unusually well, so it sits far above the account's normal performance and quietly inflates the result. Most calculators don't exclude them, which is one reason a creator's ER can look different depending on where they check it.

Read down the median column and the usual story breaks. ER is supposed to fall steadily as an account grows. It doesn't. It drops hard from under-10K into the 10K–50K band, then climbs back — 500K+ accounts post the highest median of any tier. The weakest place to be is 10K–50K, right where most creators start pitching brands.
The ranges you've been quoted are too high
Nearly every calculator site publishes the same tier bands: 5–8% "healthy" for nano accounts, 3–5% for micro. Neither survives contact with real data.
Measured under-10K median ER is 2.23%, and the top quartile of small accounts only begins at 5.24%. So "5–8% is normal for nano" isn't describing normal — it's describing roughly the best quarter of small creators. The 10K–50K claim is worse: a "3–5%" band starts above that tier's 75th percentile of 4.55%, meaning the supposedly typical range is one most accounts in it never reach.
The practical cost is real. A nano creator at 2.5% reads those numbers and concludes they're failing, then discounts their rate accordingly. They're above median.

Nearly a tenfold spread, top to bottom — much wider than anything follower count produces. Reaction content collects likes and comments almost reflexively. Instructional and reference content gets saved and sent to a friend instead, and the standard likes-plus-comments formula never sees either action. That's a measurement artefact, not proof that education creators have worse audiences.
Which is why a single "good ER" number is wrong for most people who read it. Compare against your own category on the benchmarks, not against a global average.
Where to check your ER
Any tool that reads a public account can compute it, and most now do it free. What separates them is what they compare you to: a bare percentage is close to useless without a peer group, and vendor-asserted "healthy ranges" are the problem described above.
