Instagram engagement rate is the percentage of an account's followers who actively interact with its content — liking, commenting, saving, or sharing — rather than just scrolling past it.
The formula
Engagement Rate = (Avg. Likes + Avg. Comments) ÷ Followers × 100
You average likes and comments across an account's recent posts (last 10 is standard), add them together, divide by follower count, and multiply by 100. See the full formula breakdown for a worked example and the by-reach variant.
Why every site quotes a different number
Search around and you'll find engagement rate benchmarks ranging from 0.36% to 3%+ for what's supposedly the same metric. That's not noise — it's three different things being measured with the same name:
- Brand pages vs. individual creators. Benchmark reports built from business/brand accounts (agency-run, ad-heavy, posting on a schedule) run lower than reports built from personal creator accounts, because creator content gets watched by people who chose to follow a person, not a logo.
- Followers vs. reach as the denominator. Some tools divide by reach (who actually saw the post) instead of followers (who could have). Reach-based numbers are almost always higher and aren't comparable to follower-based ones.
- What counts as "engagement." Likes-plus-comments only, versus likes-plus-comments-plus-shares-plus-saves, produces meaningfully different totals — especially on Reels, where saves and shares often outnumber comments.
Our number — 1.87% median — comes from 17,000+ real public creator profiles, computed the same way for every account: likes plus comments, divided by followers, over each account's actual recent posts. It's the number built for vetting a creator, not for benchmarking an ad account.
What counts as good, normal, or high
| Percentile | ER | Read |
|---|---|---|
| 25th | 0.72% | Below this, engagement is the problem to fix first |
| 50th (median) | 1.87% | Normal — half of creators sit below this |
| 75th | 5.56% | Strong — lead with this number in brand pitches |
Follower count shifts the baseline too. Smaller audiences tend to be more personal and reply-heavy:
| Follower tier | Median ER |
|---|---|
| Under 10K | 2.23% |
| 10K–50K | 1.52% |
| 50K–500K | 1.93% |
| 500K+ | 2.46% |
The dip in the 10K–50K range is real — it's the zone where an account has outgrown its earliest, most engaged followers but hasn't yet built the reach that comes with scale. See the full spread by niche in our benchmarks.
