Engagement rate doesn't fall in a straight line as you grow. Across real creator profiles spanning every niche we track, the lowest median engagement actually sits in the middle tier — not at the top.
Median engagement rate by follower tier
| Follower tier | Median ER | Middle 50% range |
|---|---|---|
| Under 10K | 2.23% | 1.07% – 5.24% |
| 10K – 50K | 1.52% | 0.61% – 4.55% |
| 50K – 500K | 1.93% | 0.69% – 6.03% |
| 500K+ | 2.46% | 0.94% – 6.66% |
These are exact medians for each tier across all niches in our dataset, so they reflect the real mix of creators rather than one category dominating the average.
The pattern: a dip, then a climb
- Under 10K (2.23%) — small, personal audiences. Followers are often people who know the creator or found them recently; every post reaches a warm crowd.
- 10K–50K (1.52%) — the low point. This is the "outgrowing your first audience" zone: reach widens faster than genuine interest does, so the rate compresses. Don't panic if your account dips here — it's the most common tier to feel stuck in, and it's not unique to you.
- 50K–500K (1.93%) — engagement recovers as creators develop a more defined format and a self-selecting audience.
- 500K+ (2.46%) — the highest median of the four tiers. At this size, only accounts with genuinely sticky content survive long enough to get here, so the survivors skew higher-engagement.
If you're in the 10K–50K dip, that's a benchmark issue, not necessarily a content issue — compare yourself against this tier's 1.52% median, not the account-wide 1.87% median, or you'll misjudge your own performance.
It still depends heavily on niche
Follower count is one axis; niche is the other, and it moves the number more. At 10K–50K followers alone, Athletes post a 5.31% median while Communities post 0.91% — a 5.8x spread inside the same tier. Always check your niche-specific benchmark before drawing conclusions from follower count alone.
What to do with your tier's number
- Under 10K, below 1.07% — reach is the problem before engagement is. Fix hooks and posting consistency first.
- 10K–50K, below 0.61% — you're underperforming even the toughest tier. Audit which posts still pull your original audience versus new reach.
- 50K–500K or 500K+, below the 75th percentile of your tier — you likely have a format problem, not a size problem. Double down on whatever post type already beats your own median.
